Pawleys Island, SC – Atlantic Collegiate Academy's
Hannah Lowery posted a two-over par score of 146 over 36 holes to finish third in the Style Driver Girls High School Palmetto Tournament of Champions, played over the weekend at the True Blue Golf Club.
Lowery opened the event, which was by invitation only, with an eagle par five fourth hole, and then followed with birdies and seven and eight before making the turn at three under par with a bogey on the ninth. She played the back nine in two-over par, with bogeys on 12 and 18, to finish with an opening round 71.
She was one of just three players to finish the opening round under par.
Sunday's second round proved to be more challenging for Lowery, who made bogey on the fourth and seventh holes with a birdie on the par four sixth in between to make the turn at one over par. She played the back nine in much the same fashion as she did the first day, with bogeys on 13 and 18, to finish with a three-over par 75.
ACA sophomore
Clara Beth Brady also received an invitation to play in the event and tied for 26
th overall. A total of 57 players competed in the event.
Brady got off to a slow start with a double bogey on her second hole, but she was able to overcome that to play the first nine with five pars and three bogeys to make the turn at five over par. She matched that on the back nine with four pars and five bogeys to post an opening round 82.
She posted a 92 in the second round to finish with a total score of 174.
"Due to us being a new program, our team did not get the invite to this event, but because Hannah and Clara Beth have good rankings in junior golf for the state, they got invited and played great," ACA golf coach
Bailey Paske said. "Hannah especially played well in not so favorable conditions to come in third and earn ACA our first ever medal in golf.
"I am extremely proud of both of them for persevering through the wind and rain."
Durham Academy's Jenna Kim dominated the event from start to finish, opening with a four-under par 68 on Saturday before posting a five under par 67 on Sunday. Her nine-under par total of 135 was seven shots better than teammate Saia Rempersaud, who was the only other player to finish the event under par.
Even with a 1-2 finish, Durham Academy finished second as a team behind May River High.
The entire Armada squad will be back in action next week when they travel to Florence for a rematch against Trinity Collegiate at the Florence Country Club. The nine-hole match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
"I am excited for our team to be back together and competing again," Paske said. "I know the girls are excited for a road trip to Florence. It should be a good time."
