Turbeville, SC – The Atlantic Collegiate Academy girls tennis team dropped a hard-fought match Thursday night on the road against the Wolverines of East Clarendon High.
Playing without junior standout Katie Godfrey for the second consecutive match, the young Armada squad was unable to overcome a more veteran team, falling 5-2.
"This team continues to improve as they gain competition experience," ACA Tennis coach
Michael Roberts said. "This was the best competition we have faced all season, but every player approached her match with the attitude of competing fiercely until the last point."
Junior
Kristina Miroff continued to shine for the Armada, teaming with junior
Rafaela Rey for an 8-2 doubles victory over sisters Addie and Anna Knowlton. Miroff them dominated Addie Knowlton in singles play, winning 6-0, 6-0, running her season game win streak in singles play to 36 in a row.
"Kristina was the best player in the conference this week," Roberts said. "She is now 3-0 in both singles and doubles on the year, winning a total of 62 games with just the two doubles game losses last night."
Rey had a battle on her hands in the No. 2 singles match against Anna Knowlton, falling 6-3 in the first set before losing the second set 7-6 in a 7-3 tiebreaker.
"Rafaela played a marathon match that lasted more than two hours, but she came up just short of forcing a third set in a second set tiebreaker," Roberts said.
East Clarendon was able to take advantage of its overall experience to win the other singles matches. Catherine Fleming defeated ACA sophomore
Adoniyah Goldman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Kyla Smith downed ACA freshman Neveah Moote 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and Ally Coker defeated junior
Jada Brantley 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.
The Armada will be back in action on Tuesday next week in Florence against Trinity Collegiate Academy at the Eddie Floyd Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
"This will be the strongest team on our schedule," Roberts said. "This match will measure not only how far our team has come, but how much we must grow to have the expectation of winning every match we play."
