Myrtle Beach, SC – The Atlantic Collegiate Academy girls' tennis team finished its inaugural season on Wednesday evening at Prestwick Country Club with a 5-2 victory over Manning High.
The victory allowed the first-year ACA program to finish with a 3-3 record.
"It was a great way to end the season," coach
Michael Roberts said. "This match showed the potential this team has had all season. It has been a mix of outstanding veterans and true beginners who gelled in time to walk off with a positive experience and a reason to be optimistic for next season."
ACA's two standouts – junior
Katie Godfree and senior
Kristina Miroff – both completed perfect seasons with neither dropping a single game in singles or doubles play. Playing as doubles partners the duo defeated Manning's Hanna Scammel and Tara Billups 6-0, 6-0, and then followed up in singles competition with matching 6-0, 6-0 scores over the same two players.
"Katie lost just one point during her singles match and Kristina finished off a golden season by not losing a single game in singles or doubles," Roberts said.
Junior
Rafaela Rey won her singles match over Bridget McCabe 6-3, 6-3 while freshman Neveah Moote won her match over Tori McCabe 6-4, 6-4 to give the Armada the team victory.
The visiting Monarchs took the second doubles point, with Autumn Grigg and Linda Strickland defeated ACA junior
Jada Brantley and freshman
Ashmerriet Tarbush 6-2, 6-1. Manning also won a point at the No. 4 singles spot with Jania Scammel downing Armada sophomore
Adoniyah Goldman 6-0, 6-2.
"Rafaela overcame a slight back injury to seal the win and Nevaeh recovered from the leg cramps she suffered the previous night to earn her first straight set win of the year."
The state playoffs for Class AA are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, November 5. The state finals are scheduled for Saturday, November 16. The girls' singles tennis tournament will be held on November 11-12 at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence.
"Katie is probably the prohibitive favorite to win the state singles title," Roberts said. "She has had tremendous results in her USTA tournaments and is primed for a repeat."
Godfrey, who was the Class 5A Player of the Year last year, won the 4A/5A singles tournament and is also a two-time All-State selection. She is currently the No. 2 ranked player in the state. Miroff is currently ranked No. 18 in the state.
