Armada Opens SCHSL Playoff With 3-0 Win

Conway, SC – The Atlantic Collegiate Academy volleyball team made a statement in the school's first SCHSL playoff game with a 3-0 victory over Chesterfield High on Thursday night at "The Flight Deck".

ACA improved to 23-10-5 on the year with the victory while Chesterfield closed the season with a record of 7-7. The Armada took the victory by winning the first two sets 25-15 before closing out the match with a 25-9 victory in the third set.

"We're committed to playing team volleyball," ACA coach Larry Church told MyHorryNews. "We're not the biggest or most physical team, but if we can force teams into making mistakes, we have a good chance. Since day one, we have been talking about making it to the finals. I've been there as a coach at Myrtle Beach multiple times and getting there is the hard part. Realistically, this team has a shot."

The Armada was led, as is normally the case, by its more veteran players. Seniors Ella Handley and Reese Feldman both played well, as did juniors Addison Autry and Kylie Jones. Handley had nine service aces to lead the way and added seven kills and 12 digs. Feldman had eight kills and 11 digs to go with her two aces. Autry had 19 digs along with a pair of aces and Jones had 20 assists to go with three kills and an ace.

Four more of the ACA juniors also contributed to the win – Savina Pimentel (three kills and a block), Kathryn Delea (seven kills and four digs), Ava Reyes (three kills, two solo blocks and a dig) and Ally Martin (one service ace).

The Armada advanced to play Barnwell High on Tuesday night, November 5, at 6:30 p.m. The Warhorses (12-5) defeated Andrews High 3-2 on Thursday to advance to the second round of the AA playoffs. The winner of the match on Tuesday would likely host second ranked (AA) Philip Simmons (38-7-2) in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, Nov. 7.
