Timberland, SC – The Atlantic Collegiate Academy girls' basketball team made their debut in the SCHSL playoffs on Monday night, and it was senior
Abby Fusco who led the Armada to a 51-39 upset victory over Timberland.
The Armada improved to 10-12 on the season with the victory over the Wolves (15-11), who were the No. 2 team from region 6 in Class AA. ACA advances to face the top seed from region 5, Lake Marion High on Thursday night in the second round of the playoffs. The fourth-ranked Gators (22-1) advanced to the second round with a 53-13 victory over North Central High on Monday.
After trailing early on Monday, the Armada turned up the pressure in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolves 13-4 to take a 23-16 lead into halftime. ACA continued to push its lead in the second half, leading by nine at the end of the third quarter before taking the 12-point victory.
"The girls played good defense and we shot the ball well from three and the free throw line," ACA coach
Bill Zatulskis said. "We handled all their presses and zone defenses well. It was a great road win."
Fusco finished the game with a season-high 22 points while sophomore
Zaniya Blackmon added 15 points and junior
Micah Davis grabbed 10 rebounds to go with six points.
Lake Marion enters play on Thursday night riding a 19-game win streak that dates to before Christmas when the Gators suffered their only loss on the road at Orangeburg-Wilkinson.
