A native of Williamsburg, Kan., Mary VonCannon has been a sixth-grade math and science teacher at Conway Christian School since 2015. She will serve in the role of receptionist at ACA.

VonCannon attended Pensacola Christian College where she earned a bachelor’s degree, Cum Laude, in Elementary Education. Since moving to the Carolinas after graduating from college, she has regularly earned continuing education credits from Bob Jones University and PCC.

“Since I had such amazing teachers throughout my educational years, I wanted to devote my life to helping children learn in a way that was fun and built their confidence,” VonCannon said. “I love learning about my students’ lives and finding out what their goals and interests are.”

With her husband of 25 years, Chris, VonCannon has three children. The oldest, Abrielle, is a senior at North Greenville University. The other two, Cole and Micah, are both students at ACA. Cole will be a senior this year while Micah is enrolled as a freshman.

Her teaching experience has included time as a third-grade teacher at Metrolina Christian Academy in Indian Trail, NC, as a sixth-grade teacher at Shining Light Baptist Academy in Monroe, NC and, in addition to her time at Conway Christian, she has served as a math tutor for Horry County Schools.

The fourth of five children, Mary grew up with three older brothers in eastern Kansas. Her hometown was so small that there were no traffic lights, but that doesn’t stop people from driving from all over for the barbeque ribs at Guy and Mae’s Tavern.

She was active in high school, serving as the editor of the school newspaper while also dedicating time to the French Club and the band. She was also a student-athlete, competing on both the girls’ volleyball and basketball teams, graduating as Valedictorian of her class.

She moved to Florida for college and met her future husband in a political science class there.

Her family was attracted to ACA by the prospects of a quality education for her sons to go along with excellent athletics as well as the prospect of getting to spend more time together as a family.

“My boys both love sports and they mentioned the idea of checking into Atlantic Collegiate Academy,” VonCannon said. “We were really excited to hear Mike’s vision for the school and we also love the idea of having more hours in our day to spend as a family.”

In addition to spending time with her family, which includes a pair of dachshunds named Duke and Scout, VonCannon enjoys playing the piano, something she has done since the age of six. The VonCannon family has resided in Conway since 2015.
