Douglas Leichner brings more than 30 years of leadership experience in education and athletics to Atlantic Collegiate Academy as Director of Athletics. Throughout a distinguished career spanning high school, collegiate, professional, and international sports, he has built championship programs, developed coaches, mentored student-athletes, and led athletic operations across North America, Europe, and Asia.
A native of Torrington, Conn., Leichner discovered early that athletics could provide purpose and belonging. While attending Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, basketball became the foundation that shaped his future. As team captain, he helped lead his school to a Connecticut Class LL State Championship, an experience that reinforced the values of teamwork, sacrifice, and perseverance that continue to guide his leadership today.
Leichner continued his basketball career at Central Connecticut State University, where he was a three-year NCAA Division I starter and senior captain. He earned a bachelor's degree in Social Studies-Secondary Education in 1992 before completing a master's degree in Modern American Society from Western Connecticut State University in 1995.
His coaching résumé includes leadership roles at Central Connecticut State, Stonehill College, the University of Maine, and Iona College, as well as successful head coaching positions at the high school, professional, and international levels. While coaching Ireland's UCC Demons Basketball Club, he guided the organization to a historic championship season that included league, cup, and playoff titles while earning multiple Coach of the Year honors. He also served as head coach of Great Britain's Under-20 National Team, leading the program to one of its most successful international campaigns.
Beyond the sidelines, Leichner has become recognized as an accomplished athletic administrator and operations executive, specializing in strategic planning, program development, event management, international recruiting, and organizational leadership. His experience has helped schools and organizations create systems that promote excellence while enhancing the student-athlete experience.
Leichner was drawn to Atlantic Collegiate Academy because of its innovative educational model, which combines rigorous academics, dual enrollment opportunities, and elite athletic development. He believes the Academy's vision creates an exceptional pathway for students to prepare for success in college, athletics, and life.
As Director of Athletics, Leichner is committed to building a culture rooted in accountability, discipline, and continuous improvement. His leadership philosophy is honest, balanced, and growth-focused, emphasizing high standards while celebrating meaningful progress. He believes the greatest reward comes from watching student-athletes embrace the daily process of improvement and discover what they are capable of achieving.
Leichner credits his parents as the greatest influences in his life, teaching him resilience, hard work, and personal responsibility. He and his wife, Traci, are the proud parents of two adult sons, Matthias and Markus, whom he considers his greatest accomplishment.
Outside of athletics, Leichner enjoys traveling, studying multiple languages, reading books on leadership and personal development, and listening to classic hip-hop and alternative rock. His favorite motto, "Carpe Diem" ("Seize the Day"), reflects the energy and purpose he strives to bring to every student, coach, and colleague he serves.
