A native of Columbia, SC, Marion "Buz" Busby, was selected as the head boys basketball coach at Atlantic Collegiate Academy in the summer of 2025.
Busby attended Eau Claire High where he led the Shamrocks to back-to-back state championships in 1989 & 1990 while also competing on the track and baseball teams. From there he attended the College of Charleston from 1991-95, earning Trans America Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors in 1994 while leading the Cougars into the NCAA Tournament while playing for legendary coach John Cresse while earning his degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice.
Busby still ranks eighth all-time in career scoring for the Cougars with 1,504 career points and is second all-time in career three-pointers made (220). He was a first team All-TAAC selection as a junior while also earning Lowcountry Classic Tournament MVP with wins over Penn State and Alabama. He was the College of Charleston's Chevrolet Player of the Game for his 21-point effort against Wake Forest in the NCAA First Round in 1994. Busby led the team in scoring three seasons in a row and guided the Cougars to back-to-back TAAC regular-season championship titles in 1994 and 1995. As a senior, he averaged a team-leading 16.9 points per game and was an All-TAAC First Team selection as the team went 23-6 overall earned a Postseason NIT bid.
Following his collegiate career, Busby spent time playing professionally in Austria before returning home to work at his family's golf business on Pawleys Island, serving as Operations & Sales Manager there since 1998.
He did not drift far from basketball after his playing days, becoming the head JV coach and assistant varsity coach at Waccamaw High from 2000-01. He stepped away from coaching after those two years, but returned as the Waccamaw Middle School coach from 2011-14.
His first opportunity to become a head coach came in 2014 when he took over the Waccamaw High varsity girls team, leading that team to the state playoffs in both 2015 and 2015.
He moved to become head JV boys coach at Christian Academy in 2016 while also assisting with the varsity boys team. He led the JV team to six consecutive region titles during his seven seasons leading the JV. He became the head varsity coach in 2022, leading the team to three consecutive region titles, advancing deep into the state playoffs all three years. His teams produces eight All-State performers while he was head coach there.
Busby and his wife, Melanie (a Myrtle Beach native), have three sons and one grandson. His oldest son, Justin, is a College of Charleston graduate who owns his own retail outlet, ColaKicks, at the Tanger Outlet in Myrtle Beach. Jalen, their middle son, also graduated from C-of-C and is a manager for the ColaKicks store in Charleston. His youngest son, Trey, is a junior at Coastal Carolina University.
Justin and Trey are also part of the ACA basketball family, assisting their dad in coaching the Armada.
The family also has a trio of furry family members - Lacy, Cooper and Kylo - an English Bulldog, Labradoodle and Goldendoodle respectively. The Busby's reside in Pawleys Island.
