Conway, SC – The Atlantic Collegiate Academy boys' basketball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 58-45 victory over visiting Trinity Collegiate Academy on Monday night.
The ACA girls' team did not fare as well, dropping a 49-43 decision to Trinity. The JV boys got the night started with the strong performance in a 52-25 victory.
The boys' game was tight throughout, but the Armada was able to build a six-point lead by halftime, holding that advantage through the third quarter, before pulling away late with the 13-point victory.
"The game featured multiple swings of momentum," ACA coach
Tanner Massey said. "We have much to improve on, on both side of the ball, but our ability to rebound the ball tonight is what helped us win."
Senior
Jamie Brooks, who had not played in the Armada's first two games because of an injury, scored 13 points in his season debut while junior guard
Jayden Bellamy also scored 13.
The team will have little time for rest, returning to the court tonight at 6 p.m. when the Armada hosts Valorous Academy from Little River, SC.
The Armada girls' team got off to a very slow start, falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter, before staging rallies in the second and fourth quarters. After the slow start, ACA closed to within three points, 17-14, by halftime. Trinity stretched its lead back to 10 points in the third quarter before the Armada rallied again in the final period.
"The team made a major run in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to single digits, but we ran out of time," coach
Bill Zatulskis said.
Junior
Micah Davis continued her strong play to lead the Armada, scoring eight points while grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out five assists.
It was defense that set the tone for the night in the JV game as the Armada held Trinity to just two points in the first half.
"The player established the identity of the game early with their defensive pressure," Massey said. "Our size advantage helped us in securing rebounds and getting second chance shots at the rim. We were able to play everyone on the roster and give them all an opportunity to shine."
Solomon Freshley led the JV squad with 12 points in the game while
Rock Govan added 11. Jeffrey Williams pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
All three teams will be back in action on Friday night at Mullins to open play in Region 7-AA. The girls' game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start with the boys' varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m. The boys' JV squad will open play with a 5 p.m. scheduled tip.
