Myrtle Beach, SC - Atlantic Collegiate Academy principal Mike Lorenz continues to add to his staff with the hiring of Scott Dewey as a Social Studies teacher.
Â
A native of Delmar, DE, but a local of Little River, Dewey joins the ACA Armada for his first year as a certified teacher in South Carolina. He received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Salisbury University in 2013 and gained his teaching certification through the Teachers of Tomorrow program.
Â
"Mr. Dewey is going to be a great Social Studies Teacher and will build positive relationships with our students," Lorenz said. "He is going to make history enjoyable for our students at ACA."
Â
While working towards his undergraduate degree, Dewey worked in and around athletics - both on the collegiate and professional levels. He worked in the Sports Information Office at Salisbury, supporting the 31 varsity sports but primarily working with the women's soccer, men's and women's basketball, baseball and women's lacrosse teams. The Salsbury women's lacrosse team advanced through the NCAA Division III post-season, capturing a national championship.
Â
During the baseball season, Dewey also worked for the Baltimore Orioles with the Single-A level Delmarva Shorebirds. His first season with the team, Dewey worked in the video scouting department. For the 2013 season, he was the clubhouse manager for the Shorebirds.
Â
After obtaining his undergraduate degree, and during the 2013 baseball season, Scott returned to his alma mater as the Interim Assistant Director of Sports Information. After the 2013-14 school year, Dewey transitioned to the halls of Congress, working for a Member of the House of Representatives as a constituent caseworker and Legislative Correspondent.
Â
He moved to Myrtle Beach in April of 2019, beginning his path toward the classroom, working in the certification process with Teachers of Tomorrow. That led him to being a long-term substitute with Horry County Schools for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years.
Â
"I am passionate about education and our students," Dewey said. "There is nothing more rewarding to me than watching a student invest in themselves. It is the best feeling when the student realizes the sky's the limit, the world is at their fingertips and education is the vehicle they'll use to achieve their goals."
Â
While he takes pride in the Social Studies discipline, Dewey is devoted to preparing his students for life.
Â
"I use Social Studies as a vehicle for learning life skills," Dewey said. "Whether it be personal accountability with classwork, problem solving, time management or other life skills, I want my students to leave my classroom ready to take on whatever comes their way and successfully navigate through life's journey."
Â
He has spent classroom time in several schools in the area, including Socastee, Ten Oaks and Whittemore Park middle schools, and Myrtle Beach High School.
Â
The oldest of three children to Tom Dewey and Michelle Miller, Scott's passion for teaching is a blend of real-world experience in government and athletics, and love of history and government.
Â
"I absolutely love history and government," Dewey said. "I have always had a passion for serving others - whether at Salisbury, the halls of Congress or in the classroom, and cannot wait to continue doing so at ACA."
Â
A father of two daughters, Cassidy and Isabel, Dewey enjoys spending time with them at Myrtle Waves, Big Air and other activities in the Grand Strand area. He also enjoys supporting the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Coastal Carolina athletic teams, as well as the Boston Red Sox, Penn State Nittany Lions and Salisbury Sea Gulls.
